With 10 days to go for the elections, Pathanamthitta district has adopted a novel method to motivate the public to go and cast the ballot.

The district administration of Pathanamthitta, in association with BSNL, started a scheme in which an automated call is made to all BSNL users in the district encouraging them to vote. The initiative, backed by the Election Department, was inaugurated by Pathanamthitta District Collector S Harikrishnan.

The calls will be in the voice of the District Collector S Harikrishnan emphasizing the importance of voting. Calls will be made to all the BSNL landline phones and mobile phones as well. The calls are scheduled to come between 8 in the morning and 8 at night. The scheduling has been done in such a way that each voter will get at least two calls across 9 days.

Pathanamthitta has around 1.2 lakh BSNL landline connections and around 3 lakh mobile phone connections currently active. “The number points directly at the efficiency of this scheme. If we could reach such a large number of the public on a daily basis, the people will get conditioned to go vote,” said V Rajendran, General Manager of BSNL Pathanamthitta, who is heading the programme.
