A horrifying incident of child rape and attempted murder has come to light in Karnataka’s Belagavi district.

On Saturday, the Belagavi police arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly raping a two-and-a-half-year-old girl and attempting to bury her alive.

According to Belagavi Superintendent of Police, Ravikante Gowda, Subhash Mahadeva Naikara allegedly lured the toddler on Friday evening by offering to buy her chocolates.

“Subhash Mahadeva Naikara got hold of the girl near the village anganwadi grounds where she was playing. He took her to a secluded area, located further away from the anganwadi and raped her,” the SP added.

The little girl had become unconscious and Subhash allegedly took her home with him.

“Shubhash was drunk and the girl had become unconscious but he thought she was dead. He took her home and kept her there for the night and early on Saturday morning, he began digging a pit near the area where he had sexually assaulted her. He intended to bury her in the pit,” SP said.

The girl then became conscious and began screaming for help. This alerted a passer-by.

“According to the passer-by’s statement, Shubash had lowered the girl into the pit and was trying to strangle her. He raised an alarm and the villagers helped rescue the child,” the SP added.

Police said that the little girl was bleeding profusely when she was rescued by the villagers. The girl’s parents were immediately informed by the villagers.

The girl was rushed to the Belagavi District Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, the villagers who had been looking for the child had got hold of Shubhash and thrashed him black and blue before handing him over to the police.

“Doctors have said that she is in a critical condition as she has lost a lot of blood. Her parents and a few villagers carried out a dharna outside the hospital and demanded that the accused be handed over to them. We had to pacify the protesters and they later dispersed,” the SP said.
