On Monday, actor-politician Pawan Kalyan announced that his party Janasena will not be contesting in the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections on December 7. He announced that the party would instead be focusing on contesting the Lok Sabha election in the upcoming year.

“Janasena is focusing on the areas which are meant for it regarding the elections. As the Assembly elections scheduled earlier, it is a bit difficult to participate, hence Janasena party has decided to participate in Parliamentary elections after the meeting of party leaders today. I am informing here that we are starting our preparations from now for Parliamentary elections,” reads the statement issued by Pawan Kalyan.

It was earlier reported that the party would be contesting in the Assembly elections, however after the TRS chief dissolved the government, fast forwarding the elections, the Janasena has now come out with its current stance. At the time, Pawan Kalyan had stated that the party would contest from 23 Assembly and three Lok Sabha seats in Telangana.

Addressing the media on Monday he said, “Had the Assembly elections been held as per schedule (in April 2019), the Jana Sena would have surely jumped into the fray. Since the Assembly polls have been advanced, we are not geared up for the contest.” He also added that this decision had been made after discussing the same with leaders in the party and that they would begin preparing for the Lok Sabha elections right away.

Monday was the last day for filing nominations for the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections. The YSR Congress party finally announced its complete list of candidates on Sunday evening, though it had previously stated that it would be avoiding these elections and would instead focus on the 2019 general elections in its base of Andhra Pradesh.
