September and October have been eventful months with several highly anticipated films hitting the screens. While some of these films earned rave reviews, others ended up disappointing the audience.

Some like Ee.Ma.Yau released in theatres a long time ago but have only just become available online.

Here's a list of films in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada that you can now watch on online streaming platforms like Amazon Prime, Netflix and Hotstar.

Malayalam

Jallikattu (Amazon Prime)

This Lijo Jose Pellissery masterpiece is one hell of a ride, literally. A rogue buffalo escapes from a slaughterhouse in the wee hours of the morning only to be hunted down by the villagers during the course of the day, well into nightfall. The films roves around different planes, becoming surreal in parts. The film is set in an apparently idyllic yet ominous village. Based on a short story titled Maoist by writer Hareesh, Jallikattu blurs the line between man and animal more than once. A must-watch film, made for a global audience.

Ee. Ma. Yau (Amazon Prime)

Also by Lijo Jose Pellissery, Ee. Ma. Yau is set in a fishing village. The film kicks off with the death of Vavachan Mestri and the run-up to the funeral slowly reveals various characters and their quirky, complex emotional upheavals in the scheme of things. Lijo, along with PF Mathews, invests in building the characters, keeping them as raw and real as they are, furnishing them with minute details and lending mirth in just the right measure.

Brother's Day (Amazon Prime)

Actor Kalabhavan Shajohn makes a fine debut as a director with the occasional slip-ups of a first-timer in this action comedy thriller. The film has Prithviraj, Prayaga Martin, Madonna Sebastian, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Miya George in lead roles. The film was an Onam release.

Ittymaani: Made in China (Amazon Prime)

Mohanlal plays Ittymaani, a man who was born in China and moves back to his homeland to run a business making duplicates. Debutant directors Jibi and Joju received a few positive reviews for the humour but most critics trashed the film for its weak script and lack of originality. This film was an Onam release too.

Ambili (Amazon Prime)

The talented Soubin Shahir plays the title role in this film directed by Johnpaul George, who debuted with Guppy three years earlier. Tanvi Ram plays the female lead and Naveen Nazim, brother of Nazriya, makes his acting debut in the film, as Bobby, a professional cyclist.  However, while Soubin does not disappoint, playing a child-like man with endearing quirks, the script is a huge let-down and the film comes as a disappointment.

Tamil

Oththa Seruppu Size 7 (Netflix from Nov 5)

This experimental film by Parthiban has a very simple story but a knotted narrative. Masilamani (Parthiban) is brought in for questioning about a murder. While his son waits outside, the police finds out that Masi is more than just what meets the eye. There’s only Masi in the frame throughout the film and Parthiban does an excellent job. The execution is more impressive than the story itself.

Kaappaan (Amazon Prime)

The film was scripted jointly by KV Anand and veteran writer Pattukottai Prabhakar with the former directing it. Kaappaan stars Suriya, Mohanlal, Arya and Sayyeshaa in the lead. The film received poor responses from critics for its heavily embellished story involving one too many elements strung together with little logic. The film has Suriya playing Kathiravan, an SPG (Special Protection Group) officer who is part of the team protecting Prime Minister Chandrakanth Varma (Mohanlal).

Comali (Hotstar)

This comedy film starring Jayam Ravi in the lead is about a man who wakes up from a 16-year coma. Pradeep Ranganathan made his directorial debut in this film that speaks about the perils of technology, of how it has made the world smaller and yet more distant. Yogi Babu plays Jayam Ravi’s friend and the scenes involving the two are a riot.

Kolayuthir Kaalam (Amazon Prime)

This is Nayanthara’s long-delayed project that finally released in August this year. The film has been directed by Chakri Toleti of Unnaipol Oruvan fame. Its Hindi version, also by Chakri, titled Khamoshi, starred Tamannaah. The film is the Tamil remake of the Hollywood flick Hush (2016) starring Kate Siegel in the lead.

Jiivi (Amazon Prime)

Directed by VJ Gopinath and written by Babu Tamizh, Jiivi released in June this year. Starring Vetri in the lead, the film builds up to a well-executed robbery, a perfect crime. The film surprised audience and critics alike with its slick writing and well-established characters.

Bakrid (Amazon Prime)

Bakrid starring Vikranth is a heartwarming story of love between a man and his camel. Written and directed by Jagadeesan Subu, Bakrid is based on a similar story like that of the 2005 English film Duma. The film received very good response from critics.

Telugu

Gang Leader (Amazon Prime)

This wacky and entertaining heist comedy has an outrageous premise! Actor Lakshmi plays an elderly woman out for revenge. Her grandson was one of the five perpetrators murdered in a bank robbery. She gathers four women (survivors of the deceased) and together, they bring in Pencil Parthasarathy (Nani), who has authored, nay plagiarised, 28 revenge thrillers from Hollywood movies. Gang Leader is an amusing ride through and through.

Saaho (Amazon Prime)

This high-budget, high-on-action film has Baahubali fame Prabhas playing undercover cop Ashok Chakravarthy. Shraddha Kapoor plays Amritha Nair, a fellow cop in Prabhas’s team. There's a battle of succession among the gangster groups of Waaji  (world of Saaho) with Rs 2 lakh crore at stake, and it's up to a bunch of Mumbai cops to save the day. Though the film opened to high expectations, it came as a huge disappointment thanks to the amateurish script and direction.

Kannada

Pailwaan (Amazon Prime)

Pailwaan is Sudeep and Krishna's next collaboration after Hebbuli. The film stars Sudeep as Pailwaan Kicchha aka Krishna, an orphan boy mentored by Sarkaar (Suniel Shetty). On a fateful day, when he is about to be selected for the national level, Krishna comes face-to-face with a bigger challenge, which makes him go underground for years. How he comes back forms the rest of the story. The sports drama received generally positive reviews.

Geetha (Amazon Prime)

Directed by debutant Vijay Naagendra, the film stars Ganesh, Shanvi Srivastava and Prayaga Martin in lead roles. Although it derives its name from a famous Shankar Nag Kannada film, 2019 Geetha is set against the backdrop of the Gokak Chaluvali, the language rights agitation of the 1980s in Karnataka.

Gubbi Mele Bhramastra (Amazon Prime)

Gubbi Mele Brahmastra feels like a thematic sequel to Raj B Shetty’s Ondu Motteya Kathe. Raj here plays a software engineer Venkata Krishna Gubbi who prefers to be called Krissh rather than Gubbi. His folks want him to settle down, but Raj wants to fall in love. What happens forms the rest of the story. The film received mostly positive reviews for its humour.

With inputs from Cris, Sowmya, Neelima Menon, Aravind Shwetha and Krishna Sripada.
