Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Saturda sealed the deal with DMK leader Karunanidhi and officially announced an alliance between the two parties in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections.

Talking to the media after meeting Karunanidhi at Gopalapuram, Ghulam Nabi Azad said, “DMK, Congress will form formidable alliance in Tamil Nadu elections. We & Karunanidhiji will be fighting elections together; DMK has always been our most dependable partner."

He added, “Our goal is to form the government in Tamil Nadu under Karunanidhi. There will be more allies.”

Emerging out of the meeting, DMK leader Stalin said, "The alliance with Congress is finalized. We haven't spoken about seats yet."

He refused to answer questions on why the DMK opted to go with the Congress despite differences in the Eelam issue.

Stalin added that the DMK has invited Vijayakanth's DMDK also to the alliance.

DMK had joined hands with Congress in 2004 but DMK had walked out of UPA in 2013 over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.
