After ten years of sticking together Turner Broadcasting System Inc.owned CNN and Mukesh Ambani's Network 18 Media and Investments Ltd are set to part ways in January 2016 as their agreement ends.In an official statement to Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), TV18 Broadcast Ltd informed BSE that “TV18 Broadcast Limited ("TV18") and Cable News Network, Inc. ("CNN”) will be successfully concluding their ten year brand licensing and news services arrangement for use of the "CNN" brand and CNN news content in January 2016. The parties have decided not to renew the arrangement.”The journeyIt was a journey that started ten years ago in 2005 when Global Broadcast News (GBN), a TV18 group company signed a branding agreement with CNN Turner International for the launch of an English news channel that would be called CNN-IBN. Later on, GBN became IBN18 Broadcast Ltd, which in turn became TV18 Broadcast Ltd.The deal was simple. The Indian TV channel could pick up reports from CNN’s global news coverage and CNN in return could reach the masses in the country and not just the Urban elites.Network 18 Media was founded by Raghav Bahl in 1993 who owned the conglomerate until the takeover by Mukesh Ambani's Reliance industries. The channel did see its fair share of rough ground after being accused of allegedly being awarded contracts for production & broadcasting of commercials for promoting Common Wealth Games 2010 along with NDTV, a fake tweet, a fake Live Debate and a firing spree but it survived it all and stayed on top as a competitor to other media outlets. On 29 May 2014, Reliance industries Ltd (RIL) took over the media group in what was touted as the biggest deal in the Indian media for Rs 4,000 crore.Following this, former Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai and former Deputy Editor of the channel Sagarika Ghose resigned.A.P. Parigi, Group CEO of Network18 in a statement said, “We at TV18 have benefited from this relationship with CNN. At the launch of the channel, TV18 was a relatively small organization; that has changed now. Network18 has grown from 2 news channels in 2005 to 17 news channels in 2015."Rani Raad, Chief Commercial Officer, CNN International said, “We are very proud to have created CNN-IBN in our decade long partnership with TV18. We have truly valued this long standing partnership."As the future of the two channels is debated and speculation overrides where each is headed, some reports suggest that a CNN team visited the Zee News facilities in Noida and claims that the two news broadcasting companies may be in talks.
