A day after inviting Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) Chief Kamal Haasan to join hands with its alliance, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President KS Alagiri, on Sunday, slammed the actor-politician for his remarks on DMK.

KS Alagiri, the newly-appointed President of the TNCC, on Sunday said that his invitation was made without knowing Kamal’s take on DMK and the AIADMK. “I invited him with the good intention that the anti-BJP votes should not get split. When I made the comments, I was not aware that he had used harsh language to criticise the DMK,” KS Alagiri told The Hindu. The TNCC President also added that such criticism at this crucial juncture will only help the BJP in the elections and condemned Kamal Haasan’s remarks on the Dravidian party.

TN Congress had invited Kamal Haasan to join the DMK-Congress alliance for the Lok Sabha polls, a day after the MNM leader announced that his party would go solo for the elections. This invitation came a day after Kamal Haasan told the reporters that MNM intends to keep its hands clean and hence would not ally with the DMK or the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, which is in reference to the many allegations of corruption faced by the leaders from both the parties. KS Alagiri, while extending an invite to Kamal Haasan, had said that if the MNM leader intends to protect secularism, then he should ally with their combine.

Kamal’s comments about DMK had also invited sharp response from other leaders from the party. Vaagai Chandrasekaran, a DMK MLA from Velachery, said that Kamal’s remarks are aimed at gaining political mileage.

In his interview with Thanthi TV last October, Kamal Haasan had ruled out any possibility of allying with the DMK. However, his stance was softer when it came to alliance with the Congress, which threw hints at an impending alliance. This was also aided by his meeting with Congress President Rahul Gandhi. In the interview Kamal Haasan stated that the alliance with Congress would be considered based on what Congress has in store for Tamil Nadu.
