Political parties seem to be living off the popularity of the Malaylam Facebook group International Chalu Union (ICU). With nearly two lakh followers, ICU is popular for their memes on political and social issues. As of today, three fake pages of ICU exist on Facebook, each allegedly belonging to different political parties. Reports suggest that the pages have been created to counter the posts by the original ICU page. The fake pages even carry the ICU logo, along with their respective party logos. Speaking to The News Minute, ICU official page admin Roshan Thomas said, “ICU has nothing to do with the fake Facebook pages which have cropped up recently. They have used our logo in an attempt to give their pages an official look. As a first step we have already reported copyright violation to Facebook.” He said that no legal action has been initiated against the fake pages yet. “But in case if this continues to confuse our followers we will try to do something,” he added. The saga began when the BJP reportedly created the International Chalu Union-BJP Wing page on May 20 and started posting content to counter trolls directed towards them. CPIM was quick to follow suit and created a page on May 23, followed by an International Chalu Union- Secular page the next day. According to an Asianet News report, the admin of the ICU BJP has claimed that the page has been created with the consent of the party’s IT cell. The page has more than 16,000 likes so far and the posts are sarcastic take on the activities of other political parties. International Chalu Union- CPIM Wing page also managed to gain quite some attention. However, the page had been taken down on Friday afternoon. Roshan said he is unaware of the page being taken off the social networking site. International Chalu Union- Secular seems to be the less popular page of the three. Roshan said they have not made any attempt to contact the admins of the fake pages. However, ICU-Secular page admin, who identified himself as Saman MV, told The News Minute, “I apologised to ICU and have deleted the page.”
