The News Minute | December 15, 2014 | 5:56 pm ISTInitial reports suggesting that an Indian was inside the Lindt café in Sydney have been confirmed with Parliamentary affairs minister Venkaiah Naidu of the BJP confirming as much to reporters outside Parliament today.An armed gunman has held reportedly close to 30 people hostage in a crisis which the Australian PM Tony Abbott has called “profoundly shocking” and “politically motivated”. The man is an IT executive for Infosys with family from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. He is on the right in the following picture.Infosys have just released the following statement: We can confirm that one Infosys employee is among the hostages at the Lindt Cafe in Sydney. We are also in the process of confirming the whereabouts of all our other employees in the city. We are in constant touch with the local authorities and Indian Consulate in Sydney for updates on the situation on ground. The family of the employee has been informed and we are extending all possible support to them in this difficult time. We hope that this situation gets resolved peacefully and at the earliest. Our prayers are with the families of all involved. Naidu also told reporters earlier that the External Affairs Ministry was keeping in touch with the Indian Embassy in Australia. The Indian Consulate in Sydney has also been evacuated with the EAM spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin confirming that the government was in touch with local authorities in Sydney including the High Commissioner.
