A 25-year-old Mysuru man who was studying in the United States was shot dead by an unknown assailant.

The victim has been identified as Abhishek Sudesh Bhat who was pursuing his Masters degree in Computer Science from California State University (CSU) in San Bernardino.

According to reports, Abhishek had been working part time at a hotel nearby and was wrapping up his work on Thursday evening when he was shot and killed by an unknown person.

He had completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from Vidya Vikas Institute of Engineering and Technology in Mysuru and had shifted to the US around 18 months ago to pursue a higher education, as per reports.

He is survived by his family comprising of his father Sudesh Chand who is a yoga instructor at the Upanishat Yoga Centre in Kuvempunagar and mother, Nandini Aithal, who is a housewife. As per reports, the family had received a call at around 11.30 pm on Thursday night telling them that there had been a shooting, however no further details were disclosed. The family subsequently received a call at 5.30 am informing them of their son’s demise.

Sudesh and Nandini have spoken to the Mysuru MP Pratap Simha who has assured them that all help would be given to ensure that their son's body was returned.

Just months ago, a 53-year-old Karnataka-origin man from California surrendered to police in Mount Shasta and confessed to killing four members of his family. While investigations are currently underway, police have yet to release information about the motives behind the murders. At the first hearing which was held on November 22, Shankar’s defence council pleaded not guilty. The next hearing date has yet to be set.
