 The Indian Institute of Science (IISC), Bengaluru has made it to the top five rankings in the list of best universities from BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) nations. This is the first time that an Indian University has been able to make it to the top ten rankings released by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), according to a report in Live Mint.Despite IISC not sending its data in 2014, it was ranked at number 13. But for the first time, the institute submitted its data and reached the in the top five category. It is also a matter of pride as the 105-year- old institute is the only Indian institute to make it to the top ten in the list, while seven positions out of the ten were grabbed by Chinese universities.The top three positions were held by China’s Tsinghua University, Peking University and Fudan University and the fourth rank was earned by Russia’s Lomonosov Moscow State University.The rankings are based on eight key performance indicators, relating to global image, academic staff levels, internationalization and research production and impact. IISc has the largest number of papers published per faculty member, according to a report in India Today.In total, India has 94 universities in top 400 and 31 in top 200. China is way ahead with 110 in first 400 and 67 in 200. “We are considered the best research-oriented university. It feels good to be in the top 10 list among BRICS universities, but we would like to be in the top 100 list of World University ranking,” said Govindan Rangarajan, Chairman of division of Interdisciplinary Research at IISc told Live Mint.This ranking aims to track the progress of universities of the BRICS countries, especially those that work on higher education and research national high priorities.The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore offers courses in 39 departments.Incidentally, IISC had not made it to the top 200 rankings which were released by The Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
