The News Minute| August 16, 2014| 8.30 pm IST The shooting of 18 year old Michael Brown on August 9 by Ferguson police as he was walking home from a convenience store with a friend has created much unrest in and around St.Louis county. Brown’s death has been shrouded in many controversies with the police claiming he was wanted in a store robbery case just before the fatal shooting, later police clarified that the officer who shot Brown down did not know about the robbery. The police and a section of the media’s portrayal of Brown has resulted in powerful hashtags called #Iftheygunnedmedown and #ifiwasgunneddown The Root notes, “The vicious slaying of Mike Brown by Ferguson, Mo., police has once again shown that the narrative the media paints surrounding black people in America more often than not includes depicting us as violent thugs with gang and drug affiliations.” Root further says that it is not just Brown, but even Trayvon Martin, who was killed by George Zimmerman in 2012, was depicted “as a gold-grill-wearing, weed-smoking teenager in the photos used by the media. There were no photos of Trayvon smiling with his family members or being just your average happy teen, which his family members said he was.” The Root the image of Mike Brown used my many media outlets and compared it to another picture of his.
