Telangana Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao on Tuesday demanded that if Special Category Status (SCS) was going to be granted to Andhra Pradesh, the same should also be extended to his state.

Responding to a political development, where top Congress leadership passed a resolution in New Delhi to grant SCS to Andhra, he asked the national party to clarify its stand on extending the same to Telangana.

“Will the Congress leadership remain silent if any injustice is done to Telangana? The state has already got a raw deal since the Centre has extended national status to Polavaram Project located in Andhra Pradesh, but none of the projects were given the same though Telangana has been demanding it for long," he told a gathering in Sangareddy on Tuesday.

“If Andhra Pradesh alone is given the special category status, then industries will be moved to Andhra, rendering injustice to Telangana. Do the Telangana Congress leaders support SC status for Andhra at the cost of Telangana?” he further asked.

“Congress party always prefers AP and its interests only. For instance, Congress leaders Jana Reddy and Uttamkumar Reddy never questioned Chandrababu Naidu and Congress over the injustice done to Nalgonda district. Congress party has become a true Andhra party. Its leader Rahul Gandhi is immature and not talking with the stature of a national leader,” Telangana Energy Minister Jagadish Reddy was quoted as saying.

The demand for special status to Andhra Pradesh is being strongly articulated by the ruling TDP and the opposition YSR Congress Party in the state. The Congress has also supported the demand for the state that will go to the assembly polls along with Lok Sabha elections in 2019.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) member Y.S. Chowdary accused the BJP on Tuesday of "violating the principles of friendship and political morality" and of trying to expand in Andhra Pradesh at the expense of his party.

"Now the government is misleading the people of Andhra and the media by saying that the 14th Finance Commission has recommended that there should be no special category status for any state. This is far from truth," Chowdary said.

"We are not begging, we are not asking for any favours. We are asking for what is rightfully ours," he added.
