A 26-year-old woman was found dead with burn injuries at her house at Nanda Nagar in the Erragadda locality in Hyderabad on Tuesday morning.

The woman’s toddler son, who was reportedly with her in the house at the time of the incident, was rescued by locals. The baby survived with injuries and is being treated at a local hospital.

Reports say that nearby residents rushed to the house when they saw thick smoke rising from the building and heard cries for help.

The police reached the house after they were informed by the locals about the incident.

According to the SR Nagar Police, the victim, identified as Sowmya, was married to Nagabhushan, an employee at a private firm, and the couple had a one-and-a-half-year-old baby. Sowmya was a homemaker. Police said the incident had taken place when the husband was away.

SR Nagar SHO MD Waheeduddin told TNM, “The victim’s husband is an employee at a private firm and he was away at office at that time.”

The police have registered a case pertaining to the incident under section IPC 302 (Punishment for murder), based on a complaint by Sowmya’s father Purna Rao.

SHO Waheeduddin told TNM that they suspected it to be a case of murder. He said, “Preliminary investigation suggests it is a murder. We are probing further from all angles.”

The police are currently waiting for post-mortem report.
