A Hyderabad man hired to set off fireworks suffered critical burns in a fire accident in Telangana’s Sangareddy, amid celebrations by Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) workers over the launch of eight new state government medical colleges. Kushal, a 23-year-old from Yousufguda in Hyderabad, was hired to burst firecrackers during a bike rally led by TRS Sangareddy district president and former MLA Chinta Prabhakar on Tuesday, November 15. He was seated in the back of an auto trolley carrying firecrackers and was setting off fireworks, when one of them misfired and triggered a fire in the vehicle, Sangareddy DSP (Deputy Superintendent of Police) Ravinder Reddy said. “He is being treated in the hospital. His condition is serious,” he said.

CCTV footage showed Kushal falling off the auto after catching fire, and flailing around in pain. He suffered 40% burns, according to the DSP. Two other persons also suffered minor injuries in the incident, he added. The driver of the auto was unharmed, but Kushal, who was seated alone at the back of the auto carrying the fireworks, was worst affected.

One of the eight new medical colleges was established in Sangareddy, and celebrations were organised to mark the beginning of classes there.  On Tuesday, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao launched the commencement of classes in the eight newly-established state government medical colleges. The Chief Minister launched the classes online from Pragathi Bhavan, his official residence.

With this, as many as 1,150 first-year MBBS students began their medical education in the eight colleges at Sangareddy, Mahabubabad, Mancherial, Jagtiyal, Vanaparthi, Kothagudem, Nagarkurnool and Ramagundam towns. With the inauguration of eight new colleges, the number of government medical colleges in the state increased to 17. These institutions cover 16 districts. KCR said construction of new medical colleges in another 17 districts will be taken up soon. He said that his government is determined to set up one medical college in every district.
