A Hyderabad woman approached the Malkajgiri police in the city on Thursday and registered a complaint against an NRI living in Dubai, alleging that he cheated her after promising to marry her.

The complainant also alleged that she was sexually assaulted and the accused also made her convert to his religion, after making false promises.

The man, identified as Sadar Abbas from Darulshifa in Hyderabad’s old city area, was reported to have met the woman when both of them were working in a private firm in the city, around four years ago.

The woman said that the duo fell in love and he even followed her to Dubai, when she went there to work on a project for the company.

“The woman converted to the religion of Abbas to marry him. The family members of Abbas and the victim agreed for the marriage. Later differences cropped up between the couple as she did not accept the restrictions imposed on her by Abbas,” the Malkajgiri police were quoted as saying.

Reports suggest that the wedding was planned for April this year, but the victim returned home and it was called off.

“They asked her to get her name changed in a legal document at the Haj House here, to avoid facing issues during migration,” the victim’s mother told reporters, suggesting that marriage might have been a guise, to get her daughter converted.

Based on the victim’s complaint, the police have registered a case under Sections 376 (rape) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The police said that further investigation was ongoing.

In November last year, the Hyderabad police along with district child welfare officials, raided the premises of Peace Orphan Home Society and busted a major racket, where 17 children between the ages of four and 15 were allegedly being systematically converted to Islam.

The police arrested Mohammed Siddique, the chief accused, along with 9 others, for luring children from poor families and converting them to Islam, without changing their Hindu names.
