The Rachakonda Cyber Crime police in Hyderabad on Thursday arrested a 22-year-old engineering student for harassing his classmate by creating a fake social media account on her name and posting abusive and obscene content.

The accused was identified as Eerla Vital Kumar and stayed at the Manikanta Hostel of the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) in Kukatpally.

The police said that the accused bore a grudge against the victim as she was speaking to others.

"The victim is a student of an engineering college in Uppal. She became friends with one person by name Eerla Vital Kumar who is her classmate. Meanwhile, the victim became friends with another person. The accused then took her user ID and password of the victim's Instagram profile and started sending abusive messages/nude images/videos to victim and victim's friend," the police said in a press note.

"Accused also created a fake Instagram and Gmail account and starting sending abusive messages/nude images/videos to victim and victim's friend, defaming the victim's character. Later he started black mailing her and demanding nude pictures," the press note added.

As the victim approached the police, the authorities sent a notice to Gmail asking for the login and logout details of the particular Gmail ID.

Based on the response, the Cyber Cell team of the police identified the accused and he was apprehended at the Kukkatpally Bus stop.

The police said that he accepted his offence and handed over his mobile phone, which he used to commit the crime.

A case was registered under Section 354(D) (Stalking) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the IT Act. The police said that the investigation was underway.

The case is being investigated by Rachakonda Cyber Crime Inspector D Jalender Reddy under the supervision of Rachakonda Cyber Crime ACP S Harinath and Rachakonda DCP (Crime) Naga Raju.
