It’s an unusual day for actor VK Sreeraman at his home in Kunnamangalam in Thrissur – he has been fielding numerous phone calls about his ‘death’.

Since Saturday morning, a hoax message has been doing the rounds on WhatsApp and other platforms that the actor had passed away. While the messages were being spread, Sreeraman was attending a literature meet at Kerala Sahitya Akademi, in which Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also took part.

But the veteran actor jokes that he is in no hurry to put the rumours to rest. “I believe in democracy,” the actor tells TNM. “So I should respect the majority’s beliefs!”

“What is the need to hurriedly say that I am still alive? Hence, I took my time to respond. If the majority believes that I am dead, let it be,” he says.

Sreeraman has been acting in movies for the last four decades. He is also a writer, and a prominent figure in the cultural sphere of the state.

The actor holds no hard feelings about the rumour of his death being spread on messaging platforms. “it’s natural that when people who know me only as an actor, see a message of my death and forward it with an ‘RIP’. It is also natural that such messages easily spread through WhatsApp,” he says.

“For instance, what if we got a message about the death of an actor from, say, Tamil Nadu? We would also share it with an ‘RIP’ in an instant move. But those who wanted to cross check the information had begun calling me and my friends,” he says.

While some of Sreeraman’s friends want to lodge a complaint to find the source of the hoax message, the actor himself says he has no such plans.

“People have also called my friends after seeing the message. So some of them are keen to know the source, though I don’t intend to file any complaint in this regard,” he says.
