The all Karnataka bandh on September 26 was called by the Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha and 900 other pro-Kannada organizations for the demand over Kalasa-Banduri drinking water project. This is the third time the state is facing a close-down this month over various issues.

With JD(S) and BJP supporting the bandh, Congress was forced to take a call in support to the bandh.

Times of India quoted a senior Congress leader saying, “With the crisis surrounding the Kalasa Banduri poroject becoming an emotional issue, the government does not want to go against the sentiments of the pople. We will show our support in an unofficial manner.”

Six lakh government employees have been granted a day’s earned leave by various government departments.

Will services get affected?

The bandh has affected normal life. However, Karnataka police have assured that precautions would be taken to ensure security.

Speaking to the Additional Police Commissioner, Dr.Pratap Reddy, on effect of the bandh on various sectors, he told that according to the information with the state police, transport sector might be affected on Saturday as a few Karnataka trade unions have extended their support.

Auto-rickshaws are not plying,  Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) are not operational.

The Times of India reported that government and private buses, private cabs are not going to be on the roads either. There seems to be a shortage of transport on Uber and Ola as well, although there is no official announcement of service-stoppage from them.

"Uber is committed to serving the local community with reliable and affordable transportation at the push of a button, even at a time when other services might be disrupted," Uber spokesperson said.]

Railways and Bengaluru Metro will operate as usual.

 Are private vehicles running?

Dr. Pratap Reddy has ensured that private transport would not be affected. The entire police force is on patrol in Bengaluru city.

”We are not expecting any effect on the private transport vehicles. We have made elaborate security arrangements to ensure that forcible enforcement is not done by any of the groups,” he said.

Karnataka state reserve police and city armed forces are deployed all over the state to ensure that security measures are being taken on the day of bandh.

What about education institutions and other facilities?

Government and private schools are closed as the department of public instruction has declared a holiday for schools in Bengaluru city limits.

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has halted civic work like garbage collection and disposal, issue of birth and death certificate and khata certificates.

Karnataka Milk Federation Spokesperson told TOI that milk distribution will happen as usual and milk parlours across the state will remain open throughout the day.

All movie-related activities will stop for a day, said Ba Ma Harish, secretary, Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce.

Banks and ATMs will be open through the day.

What precautions can you take?

We would recommend that you tune into a local radio or TV station before  you are about to go on any long distance trips or travelling within districts. Normally, it is the highways that bandh callers block the most.

Avoid going near Majestic, Freedom Park, Town Hall  where  the pro-Kannada organisation are rallying.

Bengaluru police have been updating information on the bandh on Twitter.
