Lyricist, music composer and director Gangai Amaren directed the Ramarajan starrer Karagattakkaran in 1989 and the movie had turned out to be a cult hit. The film was a commercial hit and had a successful 425-day run at the box office. And now, after three decades, Gangai Amaren is planning to make a sequel to the film.

On this, the director told Cinema Express in an interview, “The film will focus on what happened to the lead couple, Goundamani, Senthil, all of their kids and the status of their families. The first draft of the script is ready and I am in talks with the artists. I want to bring in everyone from the original, except Gandhimathi and Shanmugasundaram. I will make an official announcement soon, after work on the re-writes is done.”

With the sequel being announced, it needs to be seen if Gangai Amaren will be reuniting with brother, music maestro Ilayaraja. Also, fans are hoping that Senthil and Goundamani will be teaming up to offer comic relief, as they did in the first film.

Karagattakkaran starred Ramarajan and Kanaka as the lead pair with Goundamani, Senthil, Santhana Bharathi, Chandrasekhar, Gandhimathi and Kovai Sarala in supporting roles. The film was bankrolled by Karumari Kandasamy and J Durai under the Vijaya Movies banner. A Sabapathy had cranked the camera for this venture with B Lenin and VT Vijayan taking care of the editing.

It may be noted here that distributors refused to buy the film as it was a full length comedy set in a village backdrop, but it eventually went on to become a big hit.

Gangai Amaren’s last release was Themmangu Paattukaaran in the year 1997. He did not wield the megaphone after this film but has decided to direct the sequel to Karagattakkaran after all these years.
