Former Andhra Minister Mukesh Goud, who was admitted to a private hospital in Hyderabad on Sunday, passed away on Monday. The Congress leader, who was 60, was suffering from cancer and doctors had termed his condition ‘critical’.

Mukesh Goud is a leader from the Backward Class community. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.

The news of his demise was confirmed by his son, Vikram Goud, who is also a Congress leader.

Goud was born on July 1, 1959.  He is known mass leader for his approach in interacting with the public. He is also credited for winning a seat from the Old city, which is the bastion of the AIMIM.

He won as an MLA in 1989 and 2004 from Maharajgunj constituency. After Goshamahal constituency was created, he again won the elections in 2009.

He had served as the Minister of BC Social Welfare in 2007, and Minister of Warehousing and Marketing in undivided Andhra Pradesh in 2009 under YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

After losing the elections to Raja Singh in 2014, he mostly stayed away from public life due to ill-health. In spite of his condition, he again contested in the recent Assembly elections from the Goshamahal constituency, albeit unsuccessfully. Following the loss, he again preferred to stay away from public life.

Mukesh Goud’s last public appearance was when he came to cast his vote in a stretcher during this year’s Lok Sabha elections.

When his health deteriorated on Sunday, he was rushed to the Apollo Hospital in Jubilee Hills. The doctors had declared that his condition was ‘critical’, and announced that he was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Meanwhile, several senior Congress leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mallikarjun Kharge and Uttam Kumar  Reddy visited his residence in Jubilee Hills to pay homage.

Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao also expressed his condolences to his family members.

Reacting to the leader’s demise, Telangana Congress unit chief Uttam Kumar wrote, “I am deeply saddened at the passing away of former Minister & colleague Shri Mukesh Goud.”

He said that his demise was a huge loss for Telangana and the Hyderabad Congress unit.

Congress National spokesperson Sravan Dasoju tweeted, “Congress party senior leader and former minister Mukesh Goud passed away. I pray to god that his soul gets peace. I offer my condolences to their family members.”
