In a freak incident, a driver sleeping in a car died after the vehicle was submerged in rain water on Saurday.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday in the basement of an apartment building in Kukatpally area in Hyderabad.

25-year-old Bosle Gopinath was found dead in the car after the rain water was pumped out of the basement. He had tilted the seat behind and was in a sleeping position.

According to police, Gopinath dropped car owner Naveen Kumar late in the night and sought his permission to sleep in the vehicle. As it was raining heavily in the area, about two feet water got accumulated in the basement.

According to reports, the inundation was the result of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) move to a build a walking track at the Yellamma Cheruvu (lake) nearby, which closed the inlet and prevented the free flow of rainwater to the lakes.

Police suspect that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and did not realise water entering into the car. He is suspected to have died of suffocation.

The body was sent to the government-run Gandhi Hospital for autopsy.

A case was also registered under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code for suspicious death.

Citizens in Hyderabad received some respite from the heat on Friday as the city received around 3 cm of rainfall.

Several areas witnessed showers, including Gachibowli, Hafeezpet, Kukatpally, SR Nagar, Yousufguda, Secunderabad and Alwal.

Areas like Khairatabad, Begumpet and Trimulgherry also witnessed heavy rainfall.

Officials of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the rainfall was a result of thunderstorm activity.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) also deployed monsoon teams to clear water logging on the roads and clear the traffic jams, which were a result of the showers.
