The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Sunday seized 814 kgs of marijuana in Hyderabad, which was reportedly being transported for New Year celebrations in the city.

According to a report in the Times of India by Mahesh Buddi, DRI sleuths received a specific alert about huge consignment of marijuana coming to the city, and tracked a lorry with a Chhattisgarh registration to a farmhouse near Shamshabad.

A Tavera car was also said to be present at the farmhouse.

"We have seized 270 packets of high quality marijuana from inside the truck, 20 packets from Tavera and 60 more packets were found in one of the room in the farmhouse. The total weight of the marijuana is 814.5 kilos...The market value of the seized marijuana is Rs 81.44 lakh. As per the preliminary information, the marijuana was procured from Andhra-Odisha border and meant for supply to peddlers in Mumbai and Hyderabad," a DRI official told TOI.

The accused were said to have fled the spot and are absconding.

This seizure comes shortly after the excise and prohibition department in the city stated that it was concentrating on curbing the ganja trade.

“Most of the ganja supplied in the city comes from Dhoolpet...We are concentrating on the transport of ganja to the city. A few families visit the Visakha Agency area to procure ganja and a few others get it from some middlemen," Assistant Excise superintendent N Anji Reddy had told media persons.
