National award-winning filmmaker Vetrimaaran and actor Dhanush have teamed up for the fifth time in Vada Chennai, a trilogy set in north Chennai. In February, sources from the team confirmed that shoot of the first part has been wrapped up and a picture featuring the cast of the film surfaced online. The picture featured Vetrimaaran along with the important cast members of the film except Dhanush. Apparently, the post-production work has already kicked-off and the team hopes to bring the film out this year in August. According to sources close to Dhanush, it is only after the release of the first part of Vada Chennai, will he commence work on his second directorial project.

“As of now, the plan is to release the first part in August. Soon after the release, Vetrimaaran will commence work on filming the second part and will shoot the portion that won’t require Dhanush,” a source said. The story will track 30 years in the life of a gangster, played by Dhanush, who had set aside over 200 days for this epic project. Tipped to be the most ambitious project in the career of Vetrimaaran, most popular for helming Aadukalam and Visaaranai, the film will be shot in the most realistic manner featuring raw and hard-hitting action and rather than just focusing on the lifestyle of a gangster, it will also focus on their emotional side.

The film also stars Kaaka Muttai fame Aishwarya Rajesh in a key role which was originally offered to Amala Paul. The film also features Andrea Jeremiah, Daniel Balaji, Kishore and a bevy of actors in crucial roles. Most of the first part was shot in an elaborate jail set that was erected in Chennai on a lavish budget. The film also stars filmmaker Ameer in an important role and the rumour has it that this role was originally offered to Vijay Sethupathi, who opted out of the project for reasons unknown. Produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films, Vada Chennai has music by Santhosh Narayanan.
