'Dev' is a love story between two very different people: Actor Karthi

Dev is actor Karthi’s upcoming film also starring Rakul Preet Singh, Ramya Krishnan, Prakash Raj, RJ Vignesh and Amrutha Srinivasan in lead roles. The film is director Rajath Ravishankar’s debut feature and has been produced by Lakshman of Prince Pictures.

A rom-com, the film follows Dev an adventure seeker. Speaking at a press event, actor Karthi shared his memories of early childhood that he spent with producer Lakshman. “I told him that if I were to call him my classmate, he’d have to dye his hair,” he joked.

“Both of us had a middle-class upbringing and I learned how to judiciously manage money from Lakshman’s mother. While we’ve studied, travelled and eaten together, this is the first time we’ve worked together. I hope the film gets its fair share of success,” he said at the launch.

The actor also added that after Paiya which released in 2010, this is his first road adventure film. “Things were different eight years ago. The way romance was perceived 8 years ago was different. I'm eager to know how people receive this film now. I have also worked hard to look the part, shedding weight and dancing to Harris Jayaraj’s peppy numbers for the first time,” he chuckled.

Actor Rakul Preet Singh, who also spoke at the event, shared that her character Meghna is that of a powerful, independent woman and that she was happy to be sharing screen space with Karthi after the success of Theeran Adigaram Ondru.

Karthi, when he spoke, added that Rakul’s real life character matches a lot with her on screen persona in this film. “I noticed when we were working in Theeran that after she finished her shot, she’d go back and send voice notes on her mobile phone. She has so much energy and is a great entrepreneur herself,” he said.

Karthi also added that Dev is a love story between two adults with very different personalities. “She is a career oriented woman who was brought up by a single mother. Dev is a relationship loving man, brought up by a single father.”

Lyricist Thamarai who has penned the lyrics for two songs in the film added that she was quite happy to have written for Karthi. “I have always liked writing for Suriya. Sometimes, I’ve also imagined what his expressions would be like while delivering my lines. Now, I will for Karthi too,” she said.

Rajat Ravishankar, the film’s director, shared that he has tried for over 10 years to be able to direct his very first film. “I, however, had not planned for Dev to be my debut film. It so happened that things fell into place this way. I am happy with how it has turned out and I hope it is received well,” he said.

The film has been shot in different locations in Eastern European countries and in the Himalayas. The film’s cinematography has been done by Velraj and Ruben has edited it. Anbariv have done the stunts for Dev with Harris Jayaraj composing its tunes.

Dev is scheduled to release this February 14.
