A 33-year-old farmer from Gadwal district in Telangana attempted to kill himself near the Chief Minister's camp office in Hyderabad on Tuesdaymorning.
Mallesh had been facing a financial crisis and was reportedly debt-ridden.
He came near the camp office in Begumpet area at around 10.30am.
“One of the constables there noticed him vomiting and collapsing. He was then immediately shifted to Gandhi Hospital for treatment,” Inspector S Ravindar told The News Minute.
According to police, Mallesh consumed pesticide before reaching the camp office, while several media reported that he had consumed poison in front of the camp office.
“He is now out of danger and his condition is stable, but doctors have said he will be kept under observation for next 48 hours,” the inspector added.
According to media reports, Mallesh wanted to meet Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, however, he was denied permission.
“For now, we are suspecting that he was facing financial distress and wanted to talk to the chief minister about it. But the exact reasons we still need to confirm,” said Inspector Ravinder.
Mallesh stays with his wife and two children in Alur village of Gattu mandal Gadwal district.
According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Telangana registered the second highest number of farmer suicides in 2015.
There were 1,358 suicides in Telangana as against 516 in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh.
The report also revealed that ‘bankruptcy or indebtedness’ and ‘farming-related issues’ are the major causes of suicides among farmers in the country, accounting for 38% of such deaths.
A total of 20 suicides due to poverty were reported in Telangana in 2015.
