The dengue fever in Andhra Pradesh reached new heights on Friday, after it reportedly claimed fifteen lives in a single day across three districts of the state.

The Times of India reported that the victims hailed from Nellore, Prakasam and some areas of Palnadu region in Guntur district, with Nellore being the worst-hit, with 10 deaths.

Speaking to TOI, District Medical and Health Officer Sundaram said that about 175 cases had been recorded this monsoon season, but no death had occurred so far.

Three cases were reported in the state's Prakasam District while two more deaths occurred in Guntur district on Friday.

Stating that 3,414 cases of suspected dengue cases were being treated in hospitals across Prakasam district, The Hindu quoted District Medical and Health Officer Dr J Yasmin saying, "The situation is improving following the conduct of 424 medical camps including in the villages in the worst-affected mandals of Talluru and Mundlamur and destruction of larva sites. We will continue to be on our toes in the next two to three weeks when the incidence of vector-borne diseases is expected to abate."

This comes a day after officials informed Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu that 2,642 cases of dengue recorded this year, with case in Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore and Chittoor districts on the rise, while Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and Krishna districts noticed a decline.

Earlier this week, Health officials in Chittoor district said that heavy rains across several villages, had created multiple breeding sites for mosquitoes, and were the root cause for the outbreak of the disease.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease, and includes symptoms like high fever, headache, and body pain. Authorities in the state have asked anyone who shows such symptoms to visit the nearest hospital or medical clinic.
