The CBI on Monday arrested three policemen, including a Sub-Inspector of Police and two police constables attached to the Udumalpet police station in Tirupur district, in connection with a case of alleged custodial torture and rape of a woman, reported The Hindu.

SI Vijay Kumar and constables Thilak Kumar and Ranganayagam were arrested last night by the CBI’s Special Crime Branch. The three accused will be produced in court on Tuesday.

Ten police officers were interrogated by the CBI on Monday following which the three cops were arrested.

The case pertains to 2014 when the victim, suspected to have murdered her landlady, was arrested by the Udumalpet police.

Though the woman was picked up on the night of August 11, 2014, her arrest was recorded only three days later, states the report.

She was then allegedly tortured and raped in custody by some of the police personnel at the station.

Following a petition by the victim's daughter, P Rajakumari, the Madras High Court in handed over the case to the CBI.

According a Deccan Chronicle report, "She ( Rajakumari) alleged that seven police personnel of Udumalpet station had brutally beaten up her mother and inserted a lathi into her private parts while keeping her in illegal custody from August 10 to 14 so as to force her to confess killing her landlady, who had been found dead with her head smashed on August 9."

Rajakumari added that her mother was also stripped to her undergarments and hung upside down.

The police and state government at that point, had argued that the woman had sustained the injuries after she fell down in an inebriated state. In October 2014, the CBI had registered a case of custodial rape against seven personnel of the Tamil Nadu police.
