The News Minute | August 21, 2014 | 10:52 am IST Chennai Corporation has put up a list of the top 195 property tax defaulters in the city on its government website, while promising to put up the remaining in the coming days.  A list of the top 195 offenders, places J Hotels Ltd in T Nagar (Accord Metropolitan) at the top with a due amount of Rs. 4.21 crore, followed by Khivraj Tech Park in Guindy at Rs. 2.99 crore. Third on the list is Ramee Mall which owes about 1.15 crore while the Chennai Citi Centre owes Rs. 38.18 lakh. The civic body had refused to reveal its list of defaulters until an RTI enquiry was filed by The Times of India. "The remaining defaulters will also be updated soon. We hope this name and shame strategy will increase the tax collection,” said a government official.  Defaulters include government institutions like police stations, magistrate court complexes, housing board colonies, slum board tenements, Southern Railway and CMDA, according to The Times of India. The corporation which initiated uploading the defaulters list in 2009 on its website discontinued the custom after “pressure from defaulters”. Incidentally, while the number of tax payers in the city has risen from 6.5 lakh to 10.82 lakh , there has been no simultaneous increase in tax collection.
