Former District Collector of Kozhikode district, Prasanth Nair is undergoing treatment at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Ernakulam. Fondly referred to as “collector bro” by many of his fans and well wishers, Prashant Nair took to his Instagram handle to share details about his illness.

“Dear friends, I’ve received many concerned messages & calls. Thanks for the love n affection. Hopefully nothing to worry. It’s diagnosed as a sudden onset of Acute Sensory Neural Hearing loss. Rare but with decent prognosis. There are a lot of tests including MRI of the brain & a fair bit of medication involved. Response is good to the medication,” said the former collector in his Instagram post along with a picture of him in a hospital bed. (clicked by his daughter)

According to healthline.com, Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) is also known as sudden deafness. It occurs when you lose your hearing very quickly, typically only in one ear. It can happen instantly or over a span of several days. During this time, sound gradually becomes muffled or faint. According to many accounts, the patients are given appropriate treatment (steroids or even cochlear implants) after the reason for the hearing loss is ascertained.

But Prasanth has also said that there is nothing to worry.

“Life brings on something new every day. You realise you are human. Your responsibilities and vulnerabilities stare at you when you face a personal health challenge,” adds Prasanth.

It was the various programmes and policies he started during his stint as the collector of Kozhikode that earned him the title of “collector bro” among the people.

Among his many initiatives as a District Collector, a project ‘Operation Sulaimani’, was the most popular. It was a project aimed at creating a hunger free city.

Prasanth is known to be active on social media and uses his Facebook page to post important announcements, welfare schemes and other initiatives and he is also known to reply to almost all the messages he receives online, making him popular among the masses, especially the young generation.
