With just a month left to meet the deadline for the TenderSURE project on Church Street, the BBMP has pushed the deadline to September, reports The Times of India

Aparjita Ray reports that although the work that began in February was expected to be completed in six months, the BBMP has now extended the deadline by a month.

M Lokesh, executive engineer of BBMP told TOI: “We faced two challenges -nature of the work and the road itself. TenderSURE work is complex because it requires the coordination of multiple agencies. But the bigger problem was the street itself. Sewage from all commercial buildings was being let into the open drain instead of BWSSB sewers and in turn, flowing into the stormwater drain (SWD). Old water pipes were leaking. The whole area was slushy when we started to dig. We first closed the sewers and built new sewage lines. Then we turned our focus to the SWD. By Tuesday, we should be able to lay the water pipes."

The project envisages the development of 715 meter long Church Street, at a cost of Rs 9 Crore.

Earlier in May, when Bengaluru Development Minister KJ George inspected the work, he had then pulled up the officials and asked them to speed-up the work. At this point, the BBMP officials had quoted the lack of cooperation from the shop owners, as one of the reasons for the slow progress of the work.

The Minister had then asked the officials to carry out shifts in three shifts except for one.

“There is not much progress even after so many days of starting the work. Being a business area, this street had always been full of hustle bustle. Delay in the work will not be tolerated. Let the work happen round the clock. Serve notices on the shops and other business establishments who are letting the sewage into the trench dug up for utilities," Deccan Herald had then quoted the Minister as saying.
