A 33-year-old woman is missing after she allegedly fed poison to her children and killed them in Chennai on Saturday. The police claim she did so in a bid to elope with her boyfriend, Sundaram, who has been detained in connection with the murder.

According to reports, Abirami and her husband Vijay lived in a rented house in Moondramkattalai near Kundrathur. They got married 8 years ago and had two children, aged 7 and 4. On Friday, Vijay, an employee in a private bank, came home late at night. On seeing the house locked, he tried calling his wife, whose phone was switched off. He then reportedly broke open the door to see the children on the bed frothing in their mouths and the wife missing.

He immediately called for an ambulance and took them to a hospital where the doctors pronounced them dead. The bodies were then sent to the Government General Hospital, Chromepet, for post-mortem.

The Kundrathur police have registered a case based on the complaint filed by Vijay.

Police sources said preliminary enquiry revealed that Sundaram and Abirami had an extramarital affair and were planning to leave the city. Sundaram works in a biryani shop near Abirami’s house and he reportedly told the police that she killed the children in order to come and live with him.

The police have also found Abirami’s scooter parked in Koyambedu Mofussil Bus Terminus and suspect that she might have boarded a bus and left the city after committing the crime, as a report in Times of India. They have collected the CCTV footage from the terminus to confirm their suspicions.

Special police teams have been assigned to trace Abirami.
