In a tragic incident, a 14-year-old boy was killed while trying to get down from a moving bus at the Chengalpattu bus stand in Kanchipuram district on Saturday. According to reports, Y Hemachandran resided in Panankattur near Maraimalai Nagar and was a student in the Chengalpattu Ramakrishna Mission school. He commuted to school from his house everyday by the state-run Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus.

On Saturday, he boarded the bus (Route number 500) from Maraimalai Nagar to go to his school. As the bus reached Chengalpattu bus stand, it slowed down. Hemachandran tried to get off the bus, while it was still in motion. Stumbling as he fell down, Hemachandran came under the wheels of the bus, killing him at the spot. Although the onlookers rushed him to the Chengalpattu Government Hospital, the doctors there declared him ‘brought dead’.

The Chengalpattu police have registered a case against the bus driver and the conductor and are investigating. Neither have been arrested yet.

In a similar freak incident, a Class 8 student fell down from the footboard of the MTC bus in which he was travelling in at Kodungaiyur in September. He was on his way to school and was not in a rush, according to witnesses to the accident. Although he was rushed to the Stanley Government Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

In August 2017, a Class 12 student, travelling on the footboard of an MTC bus was killed after he hit a pillar of a building on the side of the road. The incident took place on Arcot Road near Vadapalani. Since the bus in which he travelled in was extremely crowded, he resorted to standing on the footboard, stated reports.
