Chennai aka Madras is celebrating its 375th birthday this year. While all things Madras from filter kaapis to the city’s lovely beaches are being celebrated, actor Kamal Hassan has reached out to Chennaities asking them to step up and be remembered for changing the course of history – by cleaning up its two polluted rivers, the Cooum and the Adyar River.

“We are ignoble descendants who have turned both these rivers into gutters,” he said.

Kamal Hassan strongly called out to the city’s inhabitants to strive to be remembered not for “turning both these rivers into gutters” but be remembered for something else – for taking up the task of cleaning and beautifying the two rivers.

Wishing Chennai a happy birthday, he reminded one and all that the reason Chennai was once chosen to be developed was because of the excellent transport facilities its rivers once provided.
