To celebrate Kamal Haasan’s completion of 60 years in cinema, the star’s production house Raajkamal Films International is planning a 3-day programme.

Born on November 7, 1954, Kamal was about five years old when he starred in AVM Productions’ Kalathur Kannamma, marking his entry into films. Kamal was immediately drawn into the spotlight with his performance in the film winning him a Rashtrapati Award (President’s Gold Medal).

The 3-day event will begin on November 7, coinciding with Kamal’s 65th birthday and his father D Srinivasan’s death anniversary. A statue of Srinivasan, who was a lawyer and a freedom fighter, will be unveiled by Kamal in his hometown, Paramakudi.

On November 8, Kamal will unveil a statue of his mentor and veteran filmmaker K Balachander at Raajkamal Films’ new office premises in Alwarpet, Chennai. Balachander’s family members are expected to be present for this event, which will be followed by a special screening of the film Hey Ram at Sathyam Cinemas in Royapettah.

Also planned as a commemoration of 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, the screening will be followed by an interaction session with Kamal Haasan. Released in 2000, Hey Ram was centred around the partition of India and the assassination of Gandhi. The film received widespread critical acclaim and is considered the actor’s best work till today. The film won three national awards.

The celebrations on the third day, titled ‘Ungal Naan’ (equivalent of ‘Yours truly’), will see a grand musical tribute by maestro Ilaiyaraaja. This event will celebrate the singer in Kamal Haasan who has sung several enticing numbers like "Ninaivo Oru Paravai", "Thenpandi Cheemayile", "Kanmani Anbodu", "Inji Idupazhagi" and more. Veteran singer SP Balasubramaniam is also expected to be a part of the musical troupe on Saturday.

The invite from Raajkamal Films also notes that actor Rajinikanth, who shares a 44-year-old friendship with Kamal Haasan, is expected to grace the occasion. The venue is yet to be confirmed.

Ungal Naan will be telecast on Vijay TV at a later date.
