Sister Nirmala Joshi, successor to Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, died aged 81 in New Delhi on Tuesday.Sister Nirmala had been heading the charity after Mother Teresa's death in 1997.In an interview, Sister Nirmala is quoted saying that “I'm from India. Ethnically I'm Nepali but I was born and grew up in India itself. I come from a Hindu background. I practise the 'highest' law in the 'highest' court, the law of charity in the court in heaven.”There was an outpouring of commiserations following her demise and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee offered their condolences.The holder of a masters degree in political science and trained as a lawyer, Sister Nirmala was one of the nuns who has dissuaded Mother Teresa from retiring when she was considering stepping down in 1990.On March 3 1997, she took charge as head of the Missionaries of Charity."She did not want to take over Mother's job and influence. She let Mother have, I would say, precedence over her," Edward Le Joly, a retired priest, had said of Sister Nirmala in a piece by the Washington Post."Everybody knows Mother. She was a woman of love, she was a mother to each one of us... She was one with us in everything. She never cared for her conveniences. When someone called her an embodiment of God, she would say there was nothing special about her," Sister Nirmala described Mother Teresa in her interview.
