B’luru man attacks minor girl with hammer after parents refuse to get them married

A minor girl in south Bengaluru was attacked by a man with a hammer on Thursday after her family refused to marry her to him before she reached the legal marriageable age.

Fifteen-year-old Bhavani was returning home from school on Thursday afternoon when Arun, her relative, attacked her and hit her on the head and face with a hammer. The attack occurred in the Thalagattapura police station limits.

Following a complaint from Bhavani’s mother, Ganga, a case of attempt to murder was registered against the 26-year-old man.

Inspector Ramappa Gutter told The News Minute that Arun worked at a bar in Jayanagar in Bengaluru. Bhavani’s mother works at a garment company, while her father is an autorickshaw driver.

“According to the investigation done so far, it seems that girl’s family is related to Arun’s family. They had agreed to get the two married. Arun and his father Puttanna had visited their house on Wednesday to ask the Bhavani’s parents to arrange for the marriage as soon as possible. However, Bhavani’s parents wanted to get her married only after she turned 18 years old,” Ramappa said.

“On Thursday he stopped her on the road and assaulted her with a hammer on her head and face. She has suffered some fractures but is out of danger,” he said.

While she didn’t want to talk about the issue, Ganga told The News Minute that Bhavani could not eat or speak.

“She has suffered some fractures. She talks to us with hand gestures. We are not sure if a surgery is required. The doctors have bandaged her face. Nothing happened to her nose. She will have to be in the hospital for a week at least,” she said.
