Amidst rising tensions in the state of Kerala over the recent protests at Sabarimala temple, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday morning addressed the media at the Kerala Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram.

“It is the BJP and RSS who are leading the protests at Sabarimala and the Congress is giving support to them. These protests are purely for political gains and have nothing to do with devotion,” he added.

The areas of Pamba, Nilakkal and the Sabarimala temple have witnessed intense protests after the historic verdict of the Supreme Court on September 28 allowing the entry of women of all ages into the Sabarimala temple.

Pinarayi Vijayan also emphasized the fact that the state government had no other option but to implement the SC verdict. The Kerala High Court on Tuesday questioned the state government for the “excessive” control by the police at Sabarimala. This after 69 people who were protesting at the Sannidhanam on Sunday night were detained by the police.

“When the gates of the Sabarimala Temple was opened on October 17 for the thulamasa pooja, several protesters had set up tents in places like Nilakkal and started protesting. The police did not take any action against this as they have the right to show their protest. But we know what happened after that. The protests became violent and several journalists, especially women journalists, who had come to do their duty were attacked. That was when the police interfered,” said Pinarayi Vijayan.

The CM added that the protests at Sabarimala were a part of the ‘Sangh agenda’.  “If someone is creating trouble Police has to take action. Police have been doing their job patiently,” he said.

Pinarayi Vijayan stated that the genuine devotees are troubled because of the Sangh Parivar. “BJP believes that they will benefit out of this situation. Everyone is seeing what they are doing to the genuine devotees,” added the Kerala CM.

During the press meet, Pinarayi Vijayan read out some of the names of the people that were arrested at Sabarimala and said that all of them were associated with either the RSS or other Hindu outfits. He also stated that most of these protesters who were arrested had criminal cases charged against them before.

BJP State President, PS Sreedharan Pillai had told the media on Monday that, “the protest of the BJP is not against the entry of women but against the Communist Party who are trying to destroy Sabarimala.”

Responding to this statement by Pillai, CM Pinarayi Vijayan said, “We want to tell BJP if you have political issues with us come and talk to us. I am willing to talk to you but don’t make genuine devotees a scapegoat in this. Don’t use Sabarimala for your political benefit.”

The CM also stated that he is confused with the stand of the Congress regarding the Sabarimala issue. “The stand of the Congress in the centre is to implement the SC verdict and in Kerala, they are competing with the BJP to not implement the verdict.”
