The News Minute | November 13, 2014 | 2.36 pm IST(Last updated: 3.15 pm IST)A gruesome video of two people stripped naked and being beaten with a hockey stick is doing the rounds through WhatsApp forwards. The man wielding the hockey stick is Suresh Ghatge, reportedly an aide of the local MLA Sanjay Patil. Patil has denied any knowledge of the incident and has said that there was no question of shielding the accused. A case has been registered with the Kagati police station in Belgavi district, with Ghatgi as the main accused. He and six others have been arrested. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Belgavi City, Anupam Agrawal told The News Minute that the incident occurred on the evening of November 3 and that the two complainants hailed from Chandgarh taluk in Kolhapur district across the border. He said that they had initially approached the police in Maharashtra as they were unsure of where to go, and denied allegations that the Belgavi police had refused to lodge a complaint."They were resting, they had been seriously injured, tests were going on. They approached the (Karnataka) police on November 10, and they had registered the case," Agrwal said."We received the video yesterday, and immediately we formed teams and sent them to Chandgarh taluk and arrested all the seven people," Agrawal said. Asked if there was any connection between Ghagte and the MLA, Agrawal said that Ghatge was a "Small-time real estate agent" in Chandgarh and was misusing the MLAs name for his own interests. On whether the MLA had filed any complaint with the police on his name being misused, Agrawal said: "No, not yet."Agrawal also said that the complainants had said that they witnesses to their friend's registered marriage. "The parents of the girl blamed these two for the girl getting married. They did not like the boy. It was a simple family dispute." Sources said that Ghatge's associates videographed the assault and Ghatge allegedly threatened to upload the videos on the internet if they told anybody about the assault.
