Following the suspension of two members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for assaulting two employees of Salem RR Biriyani in Chennai, DMK Working President M K Stalin visited the hotel at noon on Thursday. The assault was caught on camera, and went viral on social media.

Speaking to TNM, Salem RR Biriyani owner Tamilselvan said, “The DMK called us to Arivalayam, and checked up on the injured, the shop, and enquired about what had taken place. Stalin then asked us where the shop was, as he wanted to pay a visit. I initially refused as his father is unwell and a lot of important people were visiting the hospital. But, he came with us to the shop, sat inside, checked the damages, spoke to the employees and assured us help from the party’s side.”

DMK's propaganda secretary A Raja and DMK district secretary M Subramaniam were also present in the meeting.

Yuvraj, who was the DMK youth wing secretary, and Dhivakar were seen assaulting the employees for reportedly not serving them free biriyani. They were both suspended, a move for which the DMK was widely criticised for, as many demanded that the two men should have been sacked. The DMK then clarified that according to their bye-laws, people could only be suspended first and termination can be done only after the member gives a written explanation. Earlier in a tweet, Stalin had condemned the assault.

"The attack on the shop employees in Virugambakkam is highly condemnable. We have removed the men who violated the principles of our party. Strict action will be taken against those who act in a manner that brings disrepute to the party," he tweeted.

In the video, Yuvraj can be seen having an argument with the hotel cashier, who is seen sitting behind the counter. Four other young men, who were Yuvraj's cronies, stand behind watching the altercation. Yuvraj then rains blows on the employees. Speaking to TNM, the owner of the hotel said that the shop had closed for the day when the men came in and demanded free food. When the staff tried to reason with them, the men turned violent. The owner added that their injuries were so bad that the employees had to get stitches.
