Actor Vijay’s Bigil has broken many records and raked in one of the highest collections of this year’s releases. Now, it's also been revealed that the film was ranked among the top 10 most tweeted hashtags in 2019.

“From #chandrayaan2, to #diwali and #eidmubarak - 2019 was a year for celebrations on Twitter in India. Here are the top most Tweeted about hashtags in 2019 #ThisHappened,” reads the tweet from Twitter India’s official handle.

The film was the sixth most trending hashtag of the year, followed by #diwali, #avengersendgame, #ayodhyaverdict, and #eidmubarak. The top 5 trends for 2019 were #LokSabhaElections2019, #Chandrayaan2, #CWC19, #Pulawama, and #Article 370.

Bigil starring Vijay and Nayantara was released for Deepavali this year. The film was well-received by fans and critics alike and went on to make a killing at the box office. There was some controversy surrounding the film after a Telugu short filmmaker named Nandi Chinni Kumar accused director Atlee of plagiarising the story, however, it had a smooth release.

Incidentally Vijay’s earlier film Sarkar which released in 2018 for Deepavali also made it to the top 10 trends of that year. Prior to this in 2017, the film Mersal which was Vijay and Atlee’s second film together after the 2016 hit film Theri, was among the most tweeted hashtags along with Baahubali 2. The Rajamouli directorial had released in April as a sequel to his previously released film Baahubali: The Beginning which had been released two years earlier in July 2015.

Mersal too had faced a lot of controversy. BJP leaders in the state had demanded that scenes in the film which criticised the Centre’s stance on GST and Digital India be removed. The film was a box-office hit and reportedly grossed over Rs 200 crores, making it one of the most successful films of that year. The film starred Vijay in three roles along with Nithya Menen, Vadivelu, Samantha Akkineni, Kajal Agarwal, Kovai Sarala and Yogi Babu.
