What was meant as a playful dip in the lake turned deadly for this Bengaluru boy.

A teenager drowned in a fenced-off Mestripalya Lake in Koramangala 3rd Block, on Sunday, Times of India reported.

Around 2.30 pm, a group of four friends went to the lake to take a dip. The 15-year-old boy, ventured into a section of the lake which was deep.

According to an officer with the Koramangala Police, the boy began drowning after he entered a section of the lake where the water ran deep.

“His three friends began screaming for help and drew the attention of a passer-by. By the time help arrived, the boy had drowned and the three other friends fled the spot telling the passer-by that they would go and inform the boy’s parents,” the officer said.

The passer-by then raised an alarm and people in the locality rushed to the spot.

“The locals alerted us. Five expert swimmers were deployed along with some locals to search for the boy. The swimmers managed to pull out the boy within an hour’s time,” the officer said.

The officer claimed that the boy appeared to be alive and was rushed to St John’s Hospital where was declared brought dead.

“The boy’s identity is not yet known and we are trying to find out who his parents are. We suspect that he could be from one of the slums around the lake. We have made announcements about the incident in the slums in order to identify the boy’s parents. No one has come forward,” the officer added.

He said that a few locals had created an opening in the fence to enter the lake bed and that the four boys had used the same opening to get inside.

The police have taken a picture of the boy’s body and have distributed it to the nearby areas in Koramangala.

A case of unnatural death has been registered with the Koramangala Police and the boy’s body has been lodged at the St John’s Hospital.

The boy’s body will be handed over to the parents once they identify the him and an autopsy is performed.
