A family of four including a minor girl sustained burns after a 22-year-old man allegedly set their house on fire in Bengaluru on Saturday.

Deccan Chronicle reported that the accused is identified as Deepak, a resident of Srirampura and has been arrested by the police. He allegedly set his girlfriend’s house on fire after her father postponed their marriage.

The injured are Meghana, who is reportedly Deepak’s girlfriend, suffered 60% burns and her 16-year-old sister also sustained 60% burns. Meghana’s father Natraj and mother Anupama reportedly escaped with minor injuries.

The family is currently undergoing treatment in St. John’s hospital.

Police said that around 12:30AM, Deepak climbed a building close by and allegedly poured 2 litres of petrol through a window in the hall where Meghana and her sister Sanjana were asleep.

He then went to her parent’s bedroom, poured petrol and set it ablaze. The hall and kitchen got gutted.

According to DC report, police said that Deepak’s and Meghana’s families were known to each other as they were neighbours four years ago.

A few days back Deepak had come to Meghana’s house to persuade her to get married to him as soon as possible.

He had become mentally unstable and violent for the last one month after Meghana’s father asked him to continue his studies before proposing marriage and Meghana had refused to answer his calls.

The accused has been booked for attempt to murder. Srirampura police is carrying out further investigation.
