A policeman, who is with the Srirampuram police station, has been arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a minor girl, who is his niece.

Basawaraj, the accused was arrested by the Rajajinagar police on Tuesday after the 17-year-old girl’s family filed a complaint against him on Monday, reported The Times of India.

A senior police officer said that the incident happened when the victim had come to Basawaraj's house. He sexually assaulted the victim when his wife and children were out on Monday, reported Deccan Herald.

"When the victim was questioned, she stated Basavaraj had sexually assaulted while she was studying SSLC and he did it again on Monday," the officer said.

Basavaraj claimed that they (victim's parents) were conspiring against him as there is an ongoing property dispute, reported DH.

Police have registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. Both the accused and the victim have been subjected to medical tests.

“The victim has claimed that the man had also attempted to rape her two years ago. The man has been remanded in judicial custody and suspended from duty,” said DCP (North) TR Suresh.
