The Cyberabad police arrested a 44-year-old Army Colonel, for raping a 19-year-old girl, after it was found that she was pregnant.

According to the police, Rishi Sharma worked for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and assaulted the girl four months ago.

Reports add that Sharma served as an administrative officer, staying at an army quarters in Shamirpet, and was in a relationship with the girl's mother, who stayed in Upperpally in Rajendra Nagar.

The police said that the girl's parents had separated a long time ago, and the mother was raising her daughter, who is pursuing her engineering, and son, who is studying intermediate.

In January this year, when the woman went to visit her mother in Andhra's Nellore, Sharma allegedly went to her house, on the pretext of checking on the children, and dropped the boy to college.

Police said that he then returned to the flat, where he raped the girl.

"He raped the girl and warned her not to tell this to anyone, threatening her of dire consequences. Rishi continued to visit the house to meet her mother, but the girl was scared to speak out,” Rajendranagar inspector V Umender told Deccan Chronicle.

The mother realised what had happened when she took her daughter to a hospital after she fell sick, and doctors told her that the girl was pregnant.

Based on the mother's complaint, the police registered a case under sections dealing with rape and arrested Sharma.

The accused was remanded to 14 days in judicial custody.
