A woman Sarpanch from Telaprolu, Andhra Pradesh has alleged death threats from her husband. In a Facebook post that went viral, she is seen pleading for help.
In the Facebook post, Harini, the Sarpanch who belongs to the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP), shared photos of her bruise marks, allegedly inflicted by her husband Yathendra Ramakrishna, who is reportedly a district youth leader of TDP.
According to the post titled, ‘The Telugu woman who didn’t get justice’, she said that her husband has been harassing her mentally and physically for the past few days. Claiming that in spite of filing a case against him in the Gannavaram police station two years ago, her husband, using his political influence, pressurized the Inspector to go soft on the case and later forced her to withdraw the case.
“Since I am not getting justice anywhere, I want to inform you all about my ordeal. I don’t think my husband will spare my life, at least save the lives of my children. Ensure that no woman goes through my ordeal,” she alleged in the post that now has over 1.4k shares and over 1.2k reactions.
She later filed a police complaint after posting this on Facebook.
Officers from the Gannavaram police station told TNM that the Sarpanch had approached them on Monday alleging harassment by her husband.
Gannavaram Sub Inspector M Subramaniam said, “Yesterday, the Telaprolu Sarpanch came to the station and complained that her husband has been physically and mentally harassing her for the past two days. Based on her complaint, we filed a case against Yathendra under section 498 A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC. I don’t know about any previous case filed on this.”
Speaking to Vanitha TV, Harini alleged that her husband had attempted to murder her 3-4 times. She said that they had trouble for the past three years and that he has been harassing her for the past one year. She also said that her husband beat her yesterday demanding a divorce.
“However, because of the children and neighbours intervention, I was spared,” she said in the interview.
She also alleged that Yathendra objected to her involvement as a politician and wanted to dominate her in politics. She also accused him of having an affair.
The viral post has garnered support of several netizens, who came out in support of the victim.
