Andhra Pradesh government has said it would offer jobs to the mother and brother of Rohit Vemula, the research scholar at Hyderabad Central University who committed suicide on Sunday.

State Social Welfare Minister Ravela Kishore Babu said the ruling Telugu Desam Party had also offered Rs 5 lakh as ex-gratia to the family.

"On behalf of the party, the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu offered Rs 5 lakh to the family. And on government's behalf, we will be providing a contract teacher's job to Rohit's brother who is doing MSc. We will also give Rohit's mother a job appropriate for her qualifications," Ravela told PTI.

The minister and some TDP leaders  visited Vemula's mother and offered condolences on Wednesday.

On Sunday, Rohith Vemula, a Dalit scholar hanged himself from a ceiling fan in one of his friends’ hostel rooms. He had been expelled from the NRS Hostel on December 16 along with four other students.

Since then, they were sleeping in the open on the campus itself, and were later joined by other protesting students as well.

Currently, there are protests in Hyderabad Central University, with students and even some lecturers demanding that Vice Chancellor P Appa Rao should resign.

Appa Rao has been booked along with five others including union labour minister Bandaru Dattatreya for abetting Rohith’s suicide.

Following his death, many major political parties of the region and country had visited the university campus and reap political dividends out of the tragedy.
