Journalist J. Gopikrishnan, who had exposed the 2G scam, was amongst the first to oppose the recommendation of the Supreme Court collegium to appoint Gopal Subramanium as an SC judge.

In a letter of complaint to the President written on 14th May, Gopikrishnan had expressed concern over the collegium’s decision and asked the President to exercise his powers of discretion in the matter. The President then forwarded the complaint to the Government which sought a report from the CBI and the Intelligence Bureau.

Gopikrishnan, in his complaint, says that being a journalist, he reported the fraudulent attempts of Gopal Subramaniam as Solicitor General in 2010 & 2011, and as a citizen of this country, he should alert those incidents to the President.

“Shocked to read the reports on today’s (May 14) news reports on the selection of Mr. Gopal Subramaniam, who is having a doubtful integrity as Supreme Court Judge by Collegium of Supreme Court”, reads the complaint.

The letter alleged that the then SG Gopal Subramanium had disussed the 2G case in the presence of A.Raja’s lawyer following which the CBI had replaced Subramanium with lawyer KK Venugopal. He also made a reference to the Radia tapes where Niira Radia had described Gopal Subramanium as ‘their man’ in a conversation with Ratan Tata.

“These conversations between Ratan Tata and Nira Radia are about manipulations in cases relating to telecom, power, KG Basin and mining sectors in different legal forums. Interestingly in the conversations Nira Radia terms Gopal Subramanian as ‘Swimming Pool’ and ‘Our Own Man.’”

Gopikrishnan is a journalist with The Pioneer and had made the complaint in his personal capacity.
