Afzal Guru event: ABVP members slam JNU probe report as ‘compromised’

Members of the ABVP, who had objected to the controversial February 9 event on JNU campus slammed the probe rport as "compromised" and alleged that it failed to indict the offenders.

"We are disappointed with the report of the high-level committee as it fails to indict the offenders of the Feb 9 incident."

"We believe that the committee has come under the pressure of the leftist teachers, student organisations in the campus as well as political forces from outside like Rahul Gandhi, Sitaram Yechury, Anand Sharma, D Raja etc," said Saurabh Kumar Sharma, JNUSU Joint Secretary, who is the lone ABVP member in the student body.

While the report of the five-member panel has concluded that provocative slogans at the event against hanging of Afzal Guru were raised by outsiders, Sharma said, "without adequate inquiry, how could they arrive at conclusion that provocative slogans were made only by outsiders. This is an eye-wash and an effort to exempt the accused".

"We believe the panel under the 'political compromise' had failed to identify the guilt of Kanhaiya and other student representatives who were suspended. The committee also failed to indict the security unit for the dereliction of duty on their part," he said in a statement.

ABVP, which has been raising allegations of certain teachers "shielding" students, said, "the committee has failed to inquire the role of some teachers involved with this event as well as incidences afterwards. It has strangely stayed away from enquiring this particular angle".

After a high-level committee of the university, found them "guilty" of "violating university norms and discipline rules" show-cause notices were issued to 21 students on March 14 asking them to explain why disciplinary action should not be initiated against them.

The report of the five-member panel which was submitted on March 11 has pointed out lapses on part of the students as well as the administration.

The university has also issued a show-cause notice to Saurabh finding him "guilty" of "violating the university rules by blocking traffic".

"It was a 'necessity' to identify some of the people who are co-accused in raising the slogans and thereby done an irreparable loss to the image of JNU, created mayhem and havoc across India and brought ill-fame to the university," ABVP said justifying the reason for blocking the traffic.

Sharma, alleged that at the council meeting last night, Kanhaiya Kumar and other members did not allow the ABVP members to raise their point, following which they boycotted the meeting.

"They also threatened us of trapping me in false charges when I raised demands for his resignation," Sharma alleged.
