Reddit recently blocked The Fappening, a thread, that included those hacked pictures of the stars along with related threads. A report published by The Young Turks on YouTube discusses the statement released by Reddit explaining why they took the extreme measure. Reddit initially refused to block The Fappening, but later did block it because it violated site policy. Reddit in its statement writes "While current US law does not prohibit linking to stolen materials, we deplore the theft of these images and we do not condone their widespread distribution.Nevertheless, reddit’s platform is structurally based on the ability for people to distribute, promote, and highlight textual materials as well as links to images and other media. We understand the harm that misusing our site does to the victims of this theft, and we deeply sympathize. Having said that, we are unlikely to make changes to our existing site content policies in response to this specific event".Viewers are now greeted with this sign on Reddit if they try to access The Fappening. The creator of The Fappening is also reportedly unhappy about Reddit's step. He said, "If they banned my sub on Sunday (or even Monday after we broke the servers ) I would be fine with it. But they made a decision that seems based on what their lawyers say, rather than what is best for the site." Reddit received a lot of criticism from certain sections for its step to ban The Fappening because a lot of questionable stuff is posted on Reddit on a regular basis that many feel would go against their site policy. "There might be a double standard in there. But at least in this particular story, in this particular instance they did the right thing", said Ana Kasparian, the host of The Young Turks.
